Saul and his sons are have been killed by the Philistines.  David is now clear to be crowned King of Israel. 

However, it does not happen so simple.  Competing kings are anointed – David in Hebron of Judah and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul in Mahanaim.  Civil war and treachery ensues.
